In a city known for raising the bar, one bartender managed to raise it even higher.

Philadelphia’s Alexis Ortega has been crowned the 2026 U.S. Bartender of the Year at the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation Presents World Class Sponsored by DIAGEO National Finals, emerging victorious after three intense days of competition in Chicago. The prestigious title now sends Ortega to Scotland this fall, where he will represent the United States at the World Class Global Finals against elite bartenders from more than 50 countries.

For anyone who has spent time in the hospitality world, World Class is more than a competition. It is a proving ground. The event challenges competitors to demonstrate creativity, speed, technical mastery, storytelling, and hospitality under pressure. This year’s National Finals brought together the nation’s top 15 bartenders, each selected from a highly competitive field.

Ortega distinguished himself not only through flawless execution but through an approach rooted in connection. With more than two decades in hospitality, he has built a reputation for crafting elevated cocktail experiences that remain approachable and welcoming. That balance of artistry and accessibility ultimately earned him the crown.

“World Class challenged me in all the best ways,” Ortega said. “Representing the U.S. at the Global Finals is an incredible honor, and I’m ready to bring that same energy and a little dancing to the world stage.”

A New Era for World Class

This year’s competition also marked the inaugural season of the partnership between the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation and DIAGEO. Together, the organizations have expanded World Class beyond competition, positioning it as a platform for mentorship, education, community building, and career advancement within the hospitality industry.

The finalists faced a demanding series of challenges featuring iconic brands from the DIAGEO portfolio. Competitors created cocktails inspired by their heritage using Ketel One Vodka, developed trend-forward coffee cocktails featuring Mr Black Coffee Liqueur, and battled through an eight-minute speed round featuring six cocktails. The top five advanced to final challenges featuring Tequila Don Julio Blanco and Tanqueray No. TEN. Ortega emerged as the last bartender standing.

According to Erin Creighton, Director of Marketing for On-Premise at DIAGEO, Ortega’s ability to combine precision with personal perspective made him a standout competitor throughout the event.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Voisey, Executive Director of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, praised Ortega’s authenticity and individuality behind the bar, qualities that reflect the evolving culture of modern bartending.

The Cocktails That Won the Crown

Ortega’s championship run was fueled by two memorable cocktails that blended technical skill with personal storytelling.

First Call

A vibrant combination of Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur, Tequila Don Julio Reposado, grapefruit syrup, saline solution, and grapefruit soda. The cocktail delivered bright citrus notes balanced by coffee depth and complexity.

Melone di Bella Vista

An elegant stirred cocktail featuring Tanqueray No. TEN, Chamomile Bitter Bianco, concentrated honeydew melon, Centerbe, and melon liqueur, finished with a compressed melon garnish.

Together, the drinks showcased Ortega’s ability to tell stories through flavor while maintaining the technical precision demanded by World Class judges.

Looking Ahead to Scotland

The victory places Alexis Ortega among the most elite bartenders in America and positions him as a serious contender on the global stage.

As he prepares for the World Class Global Finals in Scotland, the Philadelphia bartender carries not only his own ambitions but also the pride of a hospitality community eager to see American cocktail culture shine internationally.

If Chicago was his proving ground, Scotland may become his masterpiece.
