New York City is getting a dose of road-worn Americana this fall when singer-songwriter John R. Miller rolls into Hill Country Live on Friday, October 9, 2026, for an all-ages performance supporting his latest album, The Great Unknowing.
The show begins at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m., and tickets are currently listed at $27.27. Current listings also have fellow West Virginia singer-songwriter William Matheny joining Miller as special guest.
For fans of songwriting that lives somewhere between Appalachian tradition, alt-country, folk, blues and the rough edges of rock, this one deserves a spot on the fall concert calendar.
The Great Unknowing Opens a New Chapter
Released through Rounder Records, The Great Unknowing finds Miller stretching beyond the Americana territory that first brought him attention without abandoning the unvarnished storytelling at the center of his music.
After spending a year developing the songs at home and testing them on the road, Miller headed to The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the legendary recording space associated with Leon Russell. Working with longtime collaborator and co-producer Adam Meisterhans, Miller recorded with a group of Tulsa musicians that included Paddy Ryan, Aaron Boehler, Muskrat Jones and Grammy-nominated John Fullbright.
The result feels built for an intimate live room like Hill Country, shifting between stripped-down acoustic moments and more atmospheric arrangements colored by fiddle, keyboards, electric guitar and plenty of open space.
One of the album’s standout tracks, “Tollbooth,” grew directly from Miller’s years of touring and watching the American landscape change from one trip to the next. That traveler’s perspective runs throughout the record, with songs exploring movement, memory, uncertainty and the people encountered along the way.
