There are libraries that lend books, and then there are libraries that open their doors wide enough for an entire community to see itself reflected inside.
On Saturday, June 13, the Los Angeles Public Library will present its Fourth Annual June Jubilee: A Celebration of Black Excellence. The free, family-friendly event will fill Downtown Central Library with storytelling, music, dance, workshops, creativity, and unmistakable cultural pride.
The celebration runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central Library, located at 630 W. Fifth Street in downtown Los Angeles.
A Joyful Welcome Rooted in Tradition
Guests should arrive early for an African-inspired opening ceremony featuring drummers, dancers, and a water libation blessing honoring the ancestors and the community.
Poet Erika K. Jones will also share an original poem created especially for the occasion. Together, the performances promise to begin the day with movement, reflection, and a joyful sense of belonging.
June Jubilee was curated by Changing Tones, one of the Library’s racial equity and inclusion groups. The annual celebration highlights the history, creativity, and lasting contributions of African Americans in Los Angeles and across the nation.
Preserving Los Angeles Stories
One of this year’s most meaningful additions is the CommUnity Archives Project.
Attendees will be invited to participate in interviews, record oral histories, preserve family memories, and contribute personal accounts of life in Los Angeles. It is a reminder that history does not live only in textbooks or behind museum glass. Sometimes, history sounds like a grandmother remembering her neighborhood, a father describing his first job, or a longtime resident recalling how a city block changed.
Every family carries an archive. June Jubilee is creating space for those stories to be heard and protected.
Workshops, Entertainment and Discovery
Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy live entertainment, inspiring speakers, arts and crafts, and interactive experiences for all ages.
Workshops will explore health and wellness, genealogy, financial literacy, technology, and other practical topics. Therefore, guests can celebrate Black culture while also discovering resources that may strengthen their families and communities.
The June Jubilee reflects what public libraries can be at their very best: gathering places where people learn, connect, create, and recognize themselves in the stories being told.
Admission is free, and the program welcomes babies, children, teens, adults, and seniors. For one lively Saturday in downtown Los Angeles, the library will become part classroom, part performance space, part family reunion, and entirely a celebration of Black excellence.
