Forget foam swords, choreographed Renaissance Fair battles and knights politely taking turns. When The Armored League arrives in Los Angeles on September 4, the steel is real, the armor is heavy and the hits count.
TAL 21 | West Coast will bring The Armored League to Los Angeles for the first time, taking over the Ukrainian Cultural Center for a Friday night of full-contact armored combat that sits somewhere at the crossroads of combat sports, medieval history and pure spectacle.
And yes, these folks actually hit each other.
Medieval Combat Gets a Modern Fight-Night Makeover
The Armored League has been building a following by turning armored combat into something that feels much closer to a modern fight card than a historical reenactment.
Competitors enter the ring wearing full armor and wielding weapons such as swords, axes and polearms. The weapons are regulated for competition, but the fighting itself is decidedly full contact. Fighters can score with weapon strikes, shield strikes, punches, kicks, elbows, knees and even headbutts. Takedowns and knockdowns earn additional points, while matches can end by knockout, technical knockout, judges’ decision, disqualification or forfeit.
In other words: medieval-looking, very modern adrenaline.
The organization describes its approach as professionalizing armored combat into a structured spectator sport, combining the intensity of combat athletics with the visual drama of fighters covered head-to-toe in steel. Founder Damion DiGrazia has been helping grow the sport from its New York roots, where The Armored League has developed an audience around live tournaments and armored fighting.
Los Angeles Gets Its First Taste of TAL
TAL 21 is being billed as an Armored Series Tournament, with some of the sport’s top armored fighters heading west for the league’s Los Angeles debut.
The timing makes the expansion interesting. The Armored League says its previous four New York City events sold out, and now the organization is testing that appetite on the opposite coast.
I can understand why people are curious.
There aren’t many Friday-night events where you can reasonably expect somebody to walk into the building carrying a sword without security immediately having several questions.
Los Angeles already knows how to put on a show, but TAL 21 brings a different flavor to the city’s entertainment calendar: part athletic competition, part history-inspired spectacle and part “did he really just hit that guy in the helmet with an axe?”
Spoiler: probably.

For Los Angeles fight fans looking for something well outside the traditional boxing or MMA lane, TAL 21 may be one of September’s more unusual tickets.
Because sometimes a regular fight night just doesn’t have enough armor.
