Restored Loew’s marquee with white lettering on a brown sign beneath the theatre’s ornate golden terra-cotta facade and blue sky

Some buildings don’t wait quietly for their comeback. They clear their throat first. Loew’s Jersey Theatre just did exactly that, unveiling a sneak peek of its newly restored marquee in Journal Square. The new sign was designed to reflect the look of the original, the one that greeted moviegoers when the palace first opened its doors in 1929.

Look up and you’ll see why it matters. The “LOEW’S” lettering sits in crisp white relief against deep chocolate brown. Behind it, golden terra-cotta climbs toward a brilliant blue sky, carved with flourishes nobody bothers to make anymore. It is the architectural equivalent of a perfectly tailored coat.

A Wonder Theatre Gets Its Second Act

Loew’s Jersey Theatre opened in 1929 as one of the five famed “Wonder Theatres,” the grand movie palaces Loew’s built across the metro area. For nearly a century it has lived many lives — golden-age cinema, live concerts, and a long fight to survive.

This restoration keeps the ornate bones intact. What’s new is everything you’ll hear and feel. Think state-of-the-art sound and lighting, plus flexible seating that welcomes roughly 2,600 to 4,000 guests depending on the show. Old-world glamour, new-world acoustics. That’s a rare pairing.

Getting there is easy, too. The theatre sits at 54 Journal Square Plaza, directly across from the Journal Square Transportation Center. PATH trains run from Manhattan, Hoboken, and Newark, with NJ Transit Light Rail and buses nearby.

As for me, I’ll be the one standing on the sidewalk, head tilted back, admiring that sign. Some lights are worth turning back on.
