Celebrating Three Decades of Breakthrough Cancer Research and Patient Support

As cancer continues to touch millions of families worldwide, one organization has spent the past three decades investing in the ideas many others overlook. This June, Tower Cancer Research Foundation (TCRF) will celebrate that legacy while honoring a beloved athlete whose courageous fight inspired countless people.

The Tower of Hope Gala will take place on June 9, 2026, at the prestigious Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The annual fundraising event marks TCRF’s 30th anniversary and will posthumously honor former NBA player, league ambassador, and Harvard-Westlake standout Jason Collins, who recently lost his battle with stage 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Investing in the Future of Cancer Research

For 30 years, Tower Cancer Research Foundation has championed the kind of scientific innovation that traditional funding models often overlook. Since its founding in 1996, the organization has acted as an early investor in promising cancer research, providing grants to emerging scientists pursuing bold and unconventional ideas.

The results speak for themselves. A typical Tower Cancer Research Foundation grant of $100,000 has historically helped researchers secure approximately $1.5 million in additional funding. To date, the organization has invested more than $12.1 million into cancer research initiatives that have contributed directly to 15 FDA-approved treatments and therapies.

By supporting high-risk, high-reward projects at their earliest stages, TCRF helps transform innovative concepts into life-changing medical advances.

Honoring Jason Collins’ Legacy

The evening’s most emotional moment will undoubtedly be the tribute to Jason Collins, whose impact extended far beyond the basketball court.

During his 13-year NBA career, Collins earned widespread respect as both an athlete and ambassador for the game. Following his diagnosis, he faced glioblastoma with remarkable courage and determination, becoming an inspiration to many battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

His posthumous recognition at the gala highlights the organization’s commitment to honoring individuals who embody resilience, advocacy, and hope in the face of adversity.

Supporting Patients Beyond Research

While groundbreaking research remains central to its mission, Tower Cancer Research Foundation also recognizes that patients need support today.

Through Magnolia House, TCRF’s flagship patient-support initiative, the organization provides free wellness programs, community resources, and emotional support for patients, caregivers, and loved ones navigating the cancer journey.

Each year, Magnolia House dedicates hundreds of hours to helping families find connection, guidance, and encouragement during some of life’s most difficult moments.

This dual mission of advancing future treatments while caring for those currently affected by cancer distinguishes TCRF from many research-focused organizations.

A Mission Built on Bold Ideas

According to Matt Zarcufsky, Executive Director and Chief Philanthropy Officer of TCRF, the foundation’s work is rooted in a simple but powerful belief.

“Tower Cancer Research Foundation was founded 30 years ago because a group of physicians and scientists refused to accept the cost of playing it safe. Younger scientists with radical, unproven hypotheses are often overlooked for research funding, yet groundbreaking discoveries depend on supporting new ideas. Our organization exists because early-stage, high-risk science is precisely the research conventional funding systems are least equipped to support.”

That philosophy continues to guide the foundation’s efforts as it enters its fourth decade of service.

Looking Ahead

The Tower of Hope Gala will bring together scientists, philanthropists, advocates, survivors, and supporters united by a common goal: accelerating the next generation of cancer breakthroughs while providing meaningful support for patients and families today.

Past gala honorees have included celebrated figures such as Sheryl Crow, Laura Linney, and Jennifer Grey. This year’s tribute to Jason Collins adds another inspiring chapter to the event’s history.
