Some voices arrive quietly and then refuse to leave the room. Ken Pomeroy at Town Hall promises exactly that kind of evening. The Oklahoma singer-songwriter opens for Jim James on Thursday, December 3, at 8 p.m., at one of Manhattan’s most storied stages.
If you know Jim James from My Morning Jacket, you already understand the assignment. This is a night for people who take songs seriously. Pomeroy fits that bill beautifully.
Who Is Ken Pomeroy?
At just 22, Pomeroy has built a résumé that would make a veteran blush. Moviegoers heard her cover “Wall of Death” in the blockbuster Twisters. Television fans caught her song “Cicadas” on Hulu’s Reservation Dogs. Teen Vogue has praised her as a fresh voice carrying Native Americana forward.
She has also toured with Lukas Nelson, Iron & Wine, John Moreland and Kaitlin Butts. On stage, she plays with a rare stillness. She doesn’t chase the room. She lets it lean in.
A Breakout Year, a New EP
Pomeroy is marking one year since her acclaimed project Cruel Joke. She is also preparing Tonight’s News, a new EP coming later this year from Rounder Records.
The EP gathers hand-picked covers that shaped her as an artist. Think Gillian Welch, Woody Guthrie, John Denver and Jackson Browne. Her lead single reimagines Welch and Dave Rawlings’ “Look at Miss Ohio” with a hushed, live-in-the-room glow.
The record was cut in a single day in Chicago with Tom Schick. Pomeroy and her band played live, seated in a circle, with no overdubs. Her musical partner Dakota McDaniel produced it. Her own song “Bound to Rain,” first heard on FX’s The Lowdown, lands on vinyl for the first time.
Why This Ken Pomeroy Concert Belongs on Your Calendar
Town Hall was built for nights like this. Its acoustics favor nuance, and Pomeroy’s music lives in the details. Expect emotional restraint, gorgeous guitar work and lyrics worth leaning in for.
Pairing her with Jim James feels thoughtful, not random. Both artists treat Americana as a living language rather than a museum piece. Arrive early. The opener may be the story you tell at brunch.
