GZA in a gray hoodie and black quilted jacket on a flyer for his Liquid Swords show at Brooklyn Bowl on October 15 with Phunky Nomads and Keznamdi

Some albums you listen to. Liquid Swords you study. On Thursday, October 15, Wu-Tang Clan founding member GZA brings his 1995 masterpiece to Williamsburg and performs it in full. The live band Phunky Nomads backs him, and GRAMMY-winning reggae artist Keznamdi joins as special guest. That’s GZA Liquid Swords at Brooklyn Bowl. If you came up anywhere near the five boroughs, you already know what that means.

Why GZA Liquid Swords at Brooklyn Bowl Hits Different

For the younger heads, here’s the setup. It’s 1995, and Wu-Tang is rewriting East Coast hip-hop one solo record at a time. Then the Genius drops Liquid Swords, with RZA behind the boards. It sounds like a kung fu movie scored in a Staten Island stairwell. It’s cold, patient and surgical, and every bar has a blade on it.

Thirty years later, the record still cuts. Pitchfork called it “arguably Wu-Tang’s finest hour.” Raekwon put it plainer: “The G is just the Genius… He’s the backbone.” That’s the same man who later took his rhymes and his science talk to lecture halls at Harvard. Hip-hop doesn’t get more complete than that.

Phunky Nomads Bring the Band

Live musicians change the math on these songs. Samples turn into grooves, and loops turn into conversation. Phunky Nomads give GZA room to stretch. They also give the crowd something to feel in the chest, not just the ears. Hearing “Shadowboxin’” or “4th Chamber” with a real rhythm section is its own kind of history lesson.

Keznamdi Bridges Kingston and Brooklyn

Then there’s Keznamdi. He was born in Kingston and raised between Jamaica, Tanzania, Ethiopia and the U.S. He grew up in a reggae house, too: his parents led the group Chakula. His 2025 album BLXXD & FYAH, featuring Mavado, Masicka, Marlon Asher and Kelissa, won Best Reggae Album at the 68th GRAMMY Awards.

Putting him on a Wu-Tang bill isn’t a stretch. In Brooklyn, hip-hop and the Caribbean have always shared a sound system.
