New pre- and post-cruise programs invite travelers to spend more time discovering Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam and Lausanne through local stories, food, art and culture.
For travelers who believe the best part of a European vacation sometimes happens before the ship even leaves the dock, Celebrity River Cruises is giving them a compelling reason to arrive early and stay late.
Celebrity has introduced Before and After Stays, its new take on traditional pre- and post-cruise extensions. The curated two- and three-night experiences launch in Prague and Budapest for 2027, with Amsterdam and Lausanne joining in 2028. All four destinations are currently available for booking with eligible Celebrity River Cruises itineraries.
But this isn’t simply a hotel room tacked onto either side of a sailing.
Going Beyond the Postcard
Celebrity is building the program around what many travelers increasingly want from Europe: a sense that they have actually experienced a destination rather than checked it off a list.
Each stay includes locally led experiences through Celebrity’s Discovery Collection, with guests able to select from themed outings centered around interests such as history, food, art and local culture. A Local Storyteller leads an included excursion each day, while Destination Insiders help travelers uncover experiences that might never make it into the traditional guidebook.
Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge says the goal is to create a deeper connection to Europe’s cities and the people who give them character.
“These stays are designed to deepen connection.”
That idea gets particularly interesting when you look at the experiences themselves.
In Amsterdam, guests can explore the city’s street-art culture alongside a contemporary local artist before actually picking up a spray can and participating in a collaborative work.
Prague offers a completely different flavor. Travelers can follow stories of alchemists and ancient scholars through the city’s Gothic landscape, venture beneath the surface into medieval defenses and Cold War shelters, or explore Czech beer culture through historic taverns and centuries of brewing tradition.
Luxury Without the Logistics
Perhaps the smartest ingredient in Celebrity’s formula is what travelers don’t have to do.
Before and After Stays include premium or ultra-premium centrally located accommodations, daily breakfast, ship transfers and locally led programming, removing much of the puzzle-building that comes with planning a multi-city European vacation.
Guests still have room for independent wandering, which is important. Sometimes the best European itinerary is the café you weren’t looking for, the street you accidentally turned down or the extra hour spent watching a city move around you.
The extensions connect to Celebrity’s rapidly expanding river program along the Rhine and Danube, with 33 sailings planned for 2027 and 160 in 2028, reaching more than 50 destinations.
And that’s what makes Before and After Stays noteworthy. Celebrity isn’t merely making the vacation longer. It’s attempting to make the edges of the journey matter just as much as the middle.
For river cruisers, Europe no longer has to begin at embarkation and end at disembarkation.
Sometimes the encore deserves its own spotlight.
