The untold story behind “Maria” from Sesame Street comes to life as “STREET SMART: LESSONS FROM A TV ICON” premieres exclusive footage at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
There are icons — and then there’s Sonia Manzano. For generations, she was simply “Maria” from Sesame Street. But now, audiences will finally get to know the powerhouse behind the character. STREET SMART: LESSONS FROM A TV ICON, directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Ernie Bustamante, is giving us that long-overdue moment, and it’s coming in hot with a special sneak peek at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
As someone who grew up with Maria’s warm smile and quick wit, this documentary hits home. It’s not just about nostalgia — it’s about honoring a woman who helped build the cultural foundation for so many of us, especially brown and Black kids who saw themselves in her for the first time. And now, Comic-Con attendees will get an exclusive front-row seat into Sonia’s life beyond the Street.
The doc dives deep. From her roots in the South Bronx to becoming the first Latina to hold a regular role on national TV, Sonia’s story is one of grit, grace, and groundbreaking work. We’re talking rare interviews, vibrant animation, and reenactments that pull back the curtain on the triumphs and struggles that shaped her. This ain’t just a feel-good story — it’s a masterclass in resilience.
The Comic-Con panel promises all the behind-the-scenes goodness, too. Director Ernie Bustamante will be joined by Steven Canals (yes, POSE’s Steven Canals!), illustrator Jeffrey Aviles, actress Grisselle Escotto (who portrays Sonia in the film), and moderator Misty Espinoza. Expect conversation, celebration, and some very real emotions.
Ernie says it best: “Sonia has spent her entire life making television that educates and entertains. This documentary gives us the chance to learn from her once again.”
Honestly, it’s about time.
Because Sonia wasn’t just “Maria.” She was also a writer on Sesame Street, snagging 15 Emmy Awards and paving the way for diverse stories to be told right — from the inside. She went on to write multiple books, and most recently, created Alma’s Way, an animated series that reflects the brilliance of Latinx families and young minds.
This moment at Comic-Con? It’s for all of us who found our voice because Sonia never lost hers.
If you’ll be at Comic-Con, don’t miss this. Dates are July 24–27, with the exact time for the sneak peek to be announced soon. One thing’s for sure: the legacy of “Maria” is about to take center stage — and we’ll all be better for it.
